In April of 2018, heaven gained an angel and the foster care community lost one of its own. Many staff who worked with Cathy Miller, her husband and their family, continue to think of her almost daily.
Cathy was a beautiful example of unconditional love and compassion. She invested 20 years of her life to children by fostering more than 70 youth and adopting six kids of her own. After she passed away, we opened Cathy’s Collection. We painted the walls her favorite color, purple, and gathered the handprints of her and her family to decorate. As she requested, we take only new items for the Collection.
Cathy’s Lasting Legacy
A year later, the collection still embodies who Cathy was as a person. When the space was introduced, it was for case managers, foster care staff, and foster parents to stop by and pick out items for a child or family they were meeting for the first time.
Quickly, it became equally used for celebrations, achievements and milestones big and small. Read this blog post from Cathy’s Collection’s Best Customer.
The donations to Cathy’s Collection help children heal from trauma by affirming their accomplishments and making them feel loved and worthy. The memory of Cathy through this boutique-style collection has also helped many of our staff heal.
In its first year, the Collection served over 700 foster youth, and as the years go by, we can’t wait to help more, grow bigger, and continue Cathy’s legacy.
